Literary Modernities in East Asia: Text & Traditions

This course will explore the complex forces at work in the emergence of modern East Asia through a selection of literary texts from Korea, Japan and China. How was modernity perceived at the turn of the 19th century? How did the advancement of the West complicate this perception? Considering a variety of genres from literary to popular, we will chart the course of modern expressions and concerns in East Asia of the 19th -20th centuries.
