Religion and Violence

RELIGIOUS STUDIES 3100

In this course, we will explore Christian theological engagement with the themes of resistance, nonviolence, forgiveness, justice, and peace through an extended and focused look at two major periods in the twentieth century: Nazi Germany and apartheid in South Africa. We will examine how Christian actors participated in the violence of each period, as well as how some drew upon Christian theological resources to resist violent structures, offer forgiveness, pursue justice, and enact peace. Instead of a purely historical engagement-though we will do that-we will primarily engage the theological ideas forged in each context, hearing and learning from men and women reflecting upon these significant periods within modernity. *First Year students may enroll in this course.*
